World’s 2nd largest forensic lab set up in Lahore


LAHORE – The Punjab government with the cost of Rs 2.5 billions has established world’s second largest forensic science laboratory to counter terrorism and police in investigations of criminal cases, said sources in Punjab Home Department on Tuesday. The laboratory is likely to become operational in April, 2011 at Thokar Niaz Baig and will provide services in 14 forensic disciplines namely toxicology, forensic photography, narcotics, trace chemistry, DNA and serology, crime scene investigation, firearms and tool marks, death scene investigation, questioned documents, computer forensics, latent prints, polygraph, pathology and audiovisual. The project is estimated to cost in excess of Rs 2.5 billions made available from provincial resource, an officer of Finance Department said.


Results of the laboratory would be so solid and confirm that these could not be challenged at any forum of the country including courts and acceptance of results would be recognized at international level also. For hiring qualified executives, managers and scientists for the running of forensic laboratory a two pronged strategy was devised to cope with its human resource requirement. At the first level, 32 young and promising postgraduates were selected after a rigorous competition and made to undergo training at various laboratory and police facilities in Cuyahoga, Ohio USZ in the following disciplines, Audiovisual, Narcotics, Crime Scene Investigation, Pathology, Computer Forensics, Forensic Photography, Death Scene Investigation, Polygraph, DNA & Serology, Question Documents, Fire Arms & Tool Marks, Toxicology, Latent Finger Print, Trace Chemistry. At the second level, international market was explored for hiring suitable executives and managers. As a result, Dr Ashraf Tahir, a PhD forensic scientist, presently working in Cuyahoga County Coroner’s Office, Ohio, has been selected to work as Director General on a five years contract.


Speechless India won’t share information about Samjhota Express bombing


INDIA, which is pushing Pakistan for a speedy trial of Mumbai attacks suspects, ruled out on Tuesday sharing of information with Pakistan about 2007 Samjhota Express bombing, saying it was ‘too premature’. This shameless comment came even after RSS leader terrorist admitted his involvement in these bombings.


A day after Pakistan sought an update on the probe into the Samjhota Express bombing, Indian Ministry of Home Affairs has informed the Ministry of External Affairs to convey to Islamabad that the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has not completed its probe into the 2007 explosions in the India-Pakistan train service which claimed 68 lives. “It is too premature to share any information with anyone at this stage. The investigation is still on. When it is completed, we will take an appropriate decision”, an Indian government official said.

On Monday, India’s acting Deputy High Commissioner GV Srinivas was summoned to the Pakistan Foreign Office in Islamabad and told that information on progress in the probe should be provided by New Delhi ‘at the earliest’. The NIA on Tuesday announced a cash reward of Rs 1 million each for information leading to the arrest of Sandeep Dange and Ramchandra Kalsangra in connection with the Samjhota Express blasts case. Besides the two, the NIA has also announced a cash reward of Rs 200,000 for the arrest of Ashok, also wanted in connection with the same case.

Foreign elements interfering in tribal areas: Corps Commander Peshawar


Corps Commander Peshawar Lieutenant General Asif Yasin Malik on Monday said that foreign elements have been interfering in tribal areas and intruders are being funded. In addition, uprising of militants have taken a start in some areas; efforts are being made to eliminate them. The example of militancy is like a balloon, pressing one side of it shifts air to the other part. Foreign elements are present in FATA, he added.
