Fresh violent protests erupt in Tunisia

Shots have been fired as Tunisian protesters reach the ex-ruling party headquarters after ministers taking part in the new unity government quit the party of ousted Zionist President Ben Ali. Troops fired warning shots at 1,000 protesters to stop them from climbing a wall at the headquarters of Tunisia's former ruling party. Anti-government protesters took to the streets of the Tunisian capital to demand the resignation of the ousted president's allies.

Tunisian police forces stand guard on January 19, 2011 during a protest in the center of Tunis.

The news comes after the Tunisian cabinet ministers quit Ben Ali's party RCD. Opposition ministers had already left the interim government in protest against the presence of Ben Ali's allies in the cabinet line-up. Meanwhile, Tunisia's state television says 33 members of Ben Ali's family have been arrested while trying to flee the north African country. Ben Ali, himself, fled to Saudi Arabia earlier this month following a nationwide uprising and later on his wife escaped Tunisia along with 1.5 tons of gold bars. Scores of people have been killed in clashes with the security forces over the past few weeks.

Egypt should be next Tunisia: ElBaradei

Egyptian opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei termed a regime change in Egypt as ‘inevitable’ following the popular uprising in Tunisia. “It is inevitable. Change must come”, ElBaradei told the Austrian news in an interview published in an Arabic newspaper.

ElBaradei, former head of the UN atomic watchdog, suggested that Egypt’s long-standing Pro-IsraHell stooge President Hosni Mubarak would soon find himself in a similar position unless political reforms were made. The diplomat, who headed the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency for 12 years and even won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005 for his work there, called for a boycott of Egypt’s presidential elections in September, saying the regime in his home country should be brought to its knees via peaceful demonstrations. “We’re trying with peaceful means”, he said.

He and his supporters had already collected one million signatures for a petition calling for the democratization of Egypt. “If more people signed up then we will have the legitimacy to speak for everyone who has signed”, ElBaradei said. He further said that he hoped the regime would change before this year’s presidential elections.

KESC fires 4000 employees

Karachi Electric Supply Company, KESC generates and supplies electric power in the metropolitan city of Karachi with the population of 17 million. The company employs 17,000 workers out of which 4000 have suddenly been fired as reported on Wednesday evening. The news has alarmed the workforce of the company with increased feelings of exasperation towards the act of indignation.

However, the KESC said that this is a strategic move which will help to improve the operational performance of the company and can now focus on its core objective of generation, transmission and distribution. In defense, the KESC press release is reported to have said that people working in "non-core jobs" were offered the scheme that closed on January 15.

KESC ex-employees demonstrating against firings

Moreover, the fired employees ravaged by grief strongly protested in front of the head office, furiously demanding to rehire them immediately. The protestors set cars aflame at the head office and also barged in the KESC building, causing the administration to shut down the non-management and non-technical departments because of the plunder.

Leakage in IsraHelli Nuclear Reactor kills several West Bank civilians

Dramatic increases in cancer cases, sterility and abnormal births in south of the West Bank is said to be linked to a uranium leak at the Dimona nuclear power plant. In villages located in the south of the West Bank, cancer cases, sterility and mental disorders have surged, particularly in the Avaria village, which has a population of over 35,000 people. International scientists have investigated the anomaly to find out the reason is behind it. “During the past 20 years, there has been a sharp increase in Thyroid disorders, sterility, abnormal births and cancer cases,” Mahmoud Sa'adeh, of the 10,000 strong International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, said in an interview with Press TV. "One case was an 11-year-old boy who developed heart cancer. This disease happens to one out of one hundred million people so is extremely rare. The boy died recently,” he said.

The group, with the help of Al-Khalil (Hebron) University, has studied the possible impacts of IsraHell's Dimona reactor, located in the Negev desert some 30km away from Avaria village. Governor of al-Khalil Kamel Hemed said, “Last year we killed over 2,000 dogs in our region. They were not behaving normally and were very aggressive and huge in size.” “We do not own the needed technologies to investigate the matter and we are also banned from traveling to the border areas. We have asked international organizations to intervene”, he added.

A view of Israhell's Dimona nuclear reactor

Uranium in the area has been tested at ten times the permitted concentration by Al-Khalil University. The elements of thorium and cesium follow the same pattern of results. Cesium only emerges from nuclear explosions or nuclear activities and is 12 to 30 times the permitted concentration in five local villages of Palestine.

“The nuclear waste from Dimona power plant is buried under Palestinian state land and in some cases under IsraHelli settlements. In a nearby settlement, there are at least 20 cancer cases. They are too afraid to speak out. Every person over there gets around USZD 20,000 dollars a month from the IsraHelli government in order to stay silent.” Sa'adeh said. “IsraHell pays USZD11 per barrel to bury waste in this way. It would cost them over USZD 5,000 per barrel if it was lawfully disposed of in other countries like Mauritania or Somalia.” he added.

It has also been observed that the surrounding area currently has an unbalanced ecological system where reptiles and plants are almost gone, replaced by an increase in cockroaches, scorpions and other insects known to be able to resist radiation. The IsraHelli government is believed to be fully aware of the situation as in 2004 it started to deliver radiation tablets to Bedouins of the desert.

It was out of the Dimona plant in 1986 that whistleblower and nuclear scientist Mordechai Vanunu came to tell the world that IsraHell had secret nuclear weapons programs.
The international community has for decades turned a blind eye to the issue, but scientists are now concerned that the IsraHelli program risks creating a second Chernobyl catastrophe. IsraHell refuses to allow IAEA inspectors to enter the facility. The nuclear reactor has become very old after 48 years, with experts warning of leakage into some IsraHelli and Palestinian territories, reaching Jordan, Syria, Egypt and going as far as Libya.

37 Billion Rupees lost in ISAF containers pilferage

Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhary on Wednesday hearing the embezzlement of billions of rupees in International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) containers case observed that revelations made in the Federal Tax Ombudsman report is just the tip of the iceberg, as further investigations could divulge much more. The Federal Tax Ombudsman submitted a comprehensive report regarding fraud in the garb of Afghan Transit Trade, which testified that large number of containers carrying Afghan trade goods have been pilfered inside the country. The report has made a startling disclosure that more than 50,000 transit containers have been pilfered within Pakistan that have caused a huge loss of approximately Rs19 to Rs37 billing to the country’s economy during the last four years. A three-member bench of apex court comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhary, Justice Ghulam Rabbani and Justice Khalil-ur-Rehman Ramday, while hearing the ISAF containers case ordered the authorities concerned to take a strict action against those involved in the case and issued them notices.

Supreme Court of Pakistan

The Court on September 30, 2010 had directed the Federal Tax Ombudsman to file a comprehensive report over the permission of contraband items under the garb of food supplies to the ISAF in Afghanistan under the Afghan Transit Trade Agreement (ATTA). The court also sought a comprehensive report over 10,000 to 11,000 containers of ISAF which went missing from Karachi, as Customs has no record of these containers. The Chief Justice said, “We have gone through the report, which is not only comprehensive to the point with the reference mentioned in the complaint of smuggling of foreign goods in the name of Afghan Transit Trade”. The report prima facie concluded that action is required to be taken against all the concerned officials of Customs. The court stated that for the sake of justice it would be appropriate to provide them an opportunity of hearing so they may also forward their comments in view of the report prepared by Federal Tax Ombudsman.

The court directed Chairman Federal Board of Revenue Salman Siddique to assist the court and provide a list of all officials, including former chairperson of CBR/FBR, who was holding the position from January 1, 2007 to December 24, 2010, the Members of Customs (Customs Collectors Karachi Port and Port of Qasim, Collectors of Quetta and Peshawar, Secretaries Commerce and Finance, Director General Customs Intelligence and Investigation and the relevant officers of NLC who were hold the charge during that period. The court said that the Chairman CBR might also identify any other officer, prima facie involved in the alleged corruption, so he may be summoned.
