Saudi man sets himself ablaze

A Saudi man died after setting himself on fire in the southwestern town of Samta. It would be Saudi Arabia's first such incident since an unemployed man set himself on fire in Tunisia last month sparking riots which brought down the government. Meanwhile, thousands of people rallied in Tunisia yesterday calling on their new government to quit. Demonstrators in Tunis were joined by hundreds of police officers, who said they were not responsible for the bloody crackdown against protests that ultimately led to the toppling of president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.

A protest march called "Caravan of Liberation" backed by the main UGTT trade union set off from central Tunisia headed for the capital with hundreds of local residents taking part. Drawing inspiration from the revolt in Tunisia, thousands of Yemenis demanded an end to their president's 32-year rule in a noisy demonstration at the University of Sanaa. Clashes also broke out in Algeria, as riot police clashed with protesters who tried to march in defiance of a ban on public gatherings. At least 42 people were injured.
